Morning Summary of MUST READ stories for Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The news clown is sad today about all the dummies in Washington.

AM summary of MUST READ stories across the web:

Liberal Environmentalist is an unlikely skeptic of Global Warming:

If only THIS woman’s mother & father had applied the board of education to the seat of knowledge (PEOPLE LIKE THIS ARE ACTUALLY PAID FOR THEIR ARROGANT INSENSITIVITY AND IGNORANCE?):
The “Spirited Atheist” of The Washington Post, Susan Jacoby, predictably trashed Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston as not only “poster children for the dumbing down of America” and as “most middle-class American parents’ worst nightmare,” but proof of what happens when religious people show off their contempt for book learning:

Bristol was used by her mother as an asset to placate the religious right-wing base of the Republican Party during the 2008 campaign. She was a living demonstration of Sarah Palin’s opposition to abortion: Look at my teenage daughter, she made a mistake and did the right thing by having the baby. The only more shameless aspect of Sarah’s campaign was her constant exhibition of her Down Syndrome son. Look at me, I didn’t have an abortion like those terrible elitist women who make fun of me for not reading books.

Jay Tea asks some pretty hard hitting questions about the Shirley Sherrod incident:
One element of the whole Shirley Sherrod mess has bugged me from the outset. One aspect that has simply not made any sense whatsoever in the whole narrative. And that is how quickly the Obama administration and the NAACP jumped to distance themselves from her, and how hard they jumped.

Remember the timeline. Two elements show just how quickly they reacted:

–Breitbart posts the video at 11:18 a.m. last Monday.

–Sherrod’s own account of her dismissal.

Sherrod says that she was called while driving home from work. Her boss told her that the White House had called three times to get her fired, because she was “going to be on Glenn Beck’s show tonight.”

Beck’s show airs at 5:00 p.m. That means that the White House had called three separate times between 11:18 and then. (It also means that Sherrod had already left work before 5:00, but she could have gotten an early start that day.) And between each call, there was enough time for Sherrod’s bosses to get hold of her and garner her resignation — say, at least half an hour. So knock another 90 minutes off the time frame. That means that the White House decided she had to go no later than 3:30 that afternoon, and in all likelihood even sooner.

In that 4-hour window, what elements factored into their decision to get rid of Sherrod?
Check it out … Jay concludes with the ultimate question.

Rep. Charles Djou (R-HI): Iran is a REAL THREAT:
I take seriously our nation’s security. In the oath that I took to become the U.S. Representative of Hawai‘i’s First Congressional District, I swore to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” As an Army Reserve officer, I have sworn to give my life in our country’s defense if necessary. Whenever there is a threat to our nation, it is my duty to confront it. I believe that Iran is such a threat.

Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and has aided in the killing of Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran’s government is led by a Holocaust-denying president. And Iran continues to defy the United Nations and most of the international community by developing its nuclear weapons program. A nuclear-armed Iran is a threat to the United States, to our ally Israel and to the Western world.

The Day Care Center on Capital Hill … Magical Thinkers in Washington:

Predictions of cost savings through ObamaCare, like most liberal politics, were based on magical thinking. If they want something to be true with sufficiently intensity, liberals know it must be true.

Small children are natural magical thinkers. Ask any psychologist, pediatrician, or parent. Magical thinkers believe that because they want it or can conceive of it, “it” is so, or will be so. The magically thinking child ties a cape on his back and knows that with it on, he can fly. When he jumps off the roof, he will, of course, fall, not soar like Superman. The usual cure for magical thinking is ToT (tincture of time) and evidence.

People in Congress and in the White House, though not physically small, behave like children: They depend on magical thinking. Because they say it, “it” will be.

WRITER’S ENVY … this is spectacular!!:
The election of Obama reminds me of years ago, when I bought a fake Tag Heuer watch while visiting Manhattan. Normally I walk right by street vendors, but this watch caught my eye. It was sleek and clean, and some described it as gorgeous. Only true Tag aficionados could tell that the watch was a fake.

The thing that impressed me about my fake Tag was that it had the “weight” of a real Tag. It didn’t feel like the lightweight replicas I had seen in Mexico, China, and Africa. And the best part? My fake Tag cost me $7!

… My fake Tag had all the real Tag markings on the back, though I certainly wasn’t given papers to authenticate my fake Tag. However, if I had asked, the salesperson might have produced them.

What hath “Dr. Evil” [Andrew Breitbart] wrought?:
According to Maureen Dowd, Barack Obama’s latest problem may be because he isn’t black enough:

The Obama White House is too white.

It has Barack Obama, raised in the Hawaiian hood and Indonesia, and Valerie Jarrett, who spent her early years in Iran.

But unlike Bill Clinton, who never needed help fathoming Southern black culture, Obama lacks advisers who are descended from the central African-American experience, ones who understand “the slave thing,” as a top black Democrat dryly puts it.

Everything you need to know about Silly Bandz:
If you’re a parent -— actually, even if you’re not -— you have probably seen those colorful little rubber bracelets accessorizing teens nationwide. It’s the latest superfad: rubber band-like figures shaped like anything from monkeys to faces to stars.

Silly Bandz (and their imitators) are a booming business. Silly Bandz alone sells over $100 million worth of product each year. They come in a pack of 24 for about $5, and they are everywhere, from the malls to the classrooms (some schools are even considering banning the bands for creating a nuisance).
Analysis by Benjamin Radford @ Discovery News: Anatomy of a Fad: Aboard the Silly Bandz Wagon.

PRIORITIES:
Barack Obama will skip the Boy Scout 100 year Anniversary Jamboree … Instead he will travel to New York City to appear on “The View.”

Can you spell … G[OOPS]GLE:
A few days ago, Google tried to make a vague attempt at beautifying its Image Search and complicated things in the process. Image searches became more taxing on the browser. Google Image search loaded all the pages in a single view and needed us to scroll down to see results. This was good for those with fast internet connections. However, on slow connections, it simply did not load any further pages apart from the first or, in some cases; it did not load the thumbnails after the first few pages. To add to that, the thumbnail preview on hover was a user-interface disaster and made it extremely hard to use Google Image Search anymore.
