There goes Mr. Soros again — “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”, he’s yelling from the rooftops (Reuters).

Soros is estimated currently to be worth around $9 billion in net worth; he is ranked by Forbes as the 101st-richest person in the world.

George Soros is like one of those lucky lottery winners. He became filthy rich as a speculator and now has about $9 billion to fund his tinkering with politics and economics and who knows what else. There is a certain irony in what former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker wrote in 2003 in the foreword of Soros’ book The Alchemy of Finance:

George Soros has made his mark as an enormously successful speculator, wise enough to largely withdraw when still way ahead of the game. The bulk of his enormous winnings is now devoted to encouraging transitional and emerging nations to become ‘open societies,’ open not only in the sense of freedom of commerce but — more important — tolerant of new ideas and different modes of thinking and behavior.

I guess what he was really meant was “tolerant” only of Soros’ ideas.

And I certainly agree with your assessment below:

What we DON’T need now are a bunch of “doomsayers” like Soros during such a great time of rejoice and celebration.

But, you know what? Soros isn’t ONLY one yelling “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” right now. Surprisingly, the ones who are yelling the phrase the loudest in the Blogospheres these days are the same right-wing bloggers who’ve previously espoused the trickle down economics theories of their hero, Ronald Reagan for years. Wow. I didn’t realize one could so blatantly have it both ways and STILL expect to be taken seriously about anything else they ever publish on their websites in support of so-called “conservative values”, yet, apparently that’s the way it works out here in “Political Blogger-Ville”.

Like I said on your comments to this article, “Regardless of what you think about trickle down, and all kinds of other economic crapola, there ARE serious issues that we as citizens should be a part of … and some of them could be hidden behind the gun slinger rhetoric of many bloggers in this “Wild, Wild West” we call the blogoshere. Since it IS a free “marketplace of ideas,” let’s go easy on our shooting our own … they could very well be a part of the answer.”

Ya gotta love this GTL … he’s right in there between “Pity the Fool” Mr. T and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. But there’s never a mystery as to what he’s thinking … and like his blog says, “Always on target.” I like that.
