Comedy’s new oxymoron … stand up punditry: Tom Shillue comes to Garofalo’s defense

Sorry Tom, AIR BALL … three pointer to win falls shortEverybody Lay off Janeane!
I like her. And yes, she is funny. If you’ve only seen her on political talk shows, you’re going to have to take my word for it.I did a show with her in NYC the other night, and she was delightful. A small room in the West Village, packed with people, everyone laughing. She’s a comedian, and a good one. I prefer her more personal material to the political stuff, but that’s the way I feel about most comedians. After the show we spoke, and at one point I reminded her that I’m kind of right-wing. “That’s you’re problem,” she said, and then we got back to the friendly talk. We went on to have a great conversation and share some laughs. On a personal level, I always have a good time with her, and you would too. Believe me.
Tom, I can only assume that you were recently transported from a mission in deep space and rushed immediately to the show you did with Janeane in NYC. Very nice that you two hit it off so well … especially the “small talk.” The problem with your uninformed analysis of Ms. Garofalo is that it doesn’t account for the gross mischaracterization of the event that turned out hundreds of thousands of Americans who honestly disagree with their government. She didn’t merely call out a “few” right wing fringe elements and say she disagreed with them … she threw an entire political party into her diatribe and grouped the ENTIRE Conservative movement into what she called the “white power movement.”You appear to be a decent sort of guy, but for what it’s worth, your willingness, er, eagerness to hear an “unfiltered position” is ignorant at best … patronizing at worst. This is indicative of someone who just wants to “get along,” be happy and buy the world a Coke. Good work if you can get it, but political positions are not about feeling good – they are about taking a determined stand on issues that are important for strengthening and preserving of our republic. The fact that you enjoyed a social encounter with this woman and “shared some laughs” is completely irrelevant – and picking up the flag and charging to her defense leaves you looking pretty silly.Quotes like this one by Ms. Garofalo don’t exactly start off the discussion of civics on an intellectual basis:
“Let’s be very honest about what this is about … this about a bunch of teabagging rednecks.”
I’ve always heard that when someone uses the term “let me be honest,” it’s a prelude to the exact opposite. Make no mistake here – this is not about legitimate political discussion, this about a shortage of moral virtue. To say that she has traduced the character of thousands of fine Americans would be an understatement. Just like many other Hollywood types with misguided ideas about their mission in life, Janeane has failed to make the segue from comedian to political pundit because she is mean, inconsiderate and scornful. Now might be a good time to review some quotes about character qualities …
Strong feelings do not necessarily make a strong character. The strength of a man is to be measured by the power of the feelings he subdues not by the power of those which subdue him. ~ William CarletonThe partisan strife in which the people of the country are permitted to periodically engage does not tend to the development of ugly traits of character, but merely discloses those that preexist. ~ Ambrose BierceLike an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man’s sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
If bad manners, contemptuousness and uncivil behavior were the basis for eHarmony matches, she and Bill Maher would be the marriage made in heav — er, that other place. She has the audacity to talk about anti-intellectualism, and then delivers this sort of tripe?
If you have a cerebral electorate, Fox News goes down the toilet … that’s why Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch started this venture, is to disinform and the coarsen and to dumb down a certain segment of the electorate.
I guess if cable news ratings are any indication, there is a much larger segment of the electorate which has already been dumbed downed than previously realized … FOX News Beats CNN, MSNBC, Headline News… Combined.Come on … do me a favor and just imagine Ms. G in front of an investigative Senate Committee testifying about what she knows to be true about the Tax Tea Parties? I’m thinking it would go something like this …
SENATE CHAIRPERSON: Ms. Garofalo, please tell us what you know to be true about the demographics of this Tea Party group.”Garofalo: “I didn’t know there were so many racists left … I — you know, because as I’ve said, the Republican hype and the conservative movement has now crystallized into the white power movement.”
I think you get the idea. But let me hasten to remind you of something you said in your article …
Speaking tactfully is not something we should expect of (sp) demand from entertainers – in fact, we should encourage just the opposite.
Dude, what are you taking about? Do you have a CLUE about what you just said? Since the English language does not appear to be your forte, allow me to provide the antonyms for the word, “tactfully” (this is your stated target for what we want to encourage from entertainers):

carelessness, indiscretion, thoughtlessness

Does that offer an accurate summary of where you wanted to go with that statement? I didn’t think so.Maybe what you need is a nice birthday present, or a Happy April present … it doesn’t matter to me. But since I’m a little short on cash right now, after Government Confiscatory Taxation Day, I’m going to ask you to put up a few of your own dollars and get a copy of Arrogance: Rescuing America From The Media Elite by Bernard Goldberg. You know Bernie? If you were paying any attention to Janeane’s discussion with Olbermann, you would remember the mention of the name. Well, his book deals with the “RACISM” subject that you danced around in your article … get a copy and for goodness sake, READ IT.If you’d like to really impress the Conservative faithful, pick up A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media … Goldberg’s latest (Currently at #580 on Amazon). And if you’d like to go “whole hog,” include a copy of Mark Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto. This should give you more than enough clues toward “getting a (REAL) life” rather than rubbing elbows with those charming leftists. (BTW … Liberty and Tyranny is still at #1 on Amazon. Obviously being thrown in as a free gift for all those rednecks buying ammo). The original video and transcript for the Garofalo/Olbermann interview can be found here >> LINK.Here’s hoping you get another shot at sinking that “three-pointer.” I’ll be cheering for you from the RIGHT SIDE of the arena.
