Her decision was a dramatic statement on the state of the GOP, which she accused of abandoning its responsibilities and principles. Setmayer stated, “The Republican party has abdicated their responsibilities and made a mockery of their oaths of office…the party has turned into a party of white grievance, hypocrisy, voter suppression, authoritarianism, conspiracy theories, racism, misogyny, and indecency.”

Setmayer’s denunciation of the GOP was clear and forceful. She expressed her refusal to be part of a party she felt had strayed far from its original ideals. “I will be an independent now. I’m still a little ‘c’ conservative. My belief system and world view has not changed because the messengers are fallible. But I’ll tell you something right now, my fight moving forward is part of this pro-democracy movement and it’s to do the right thing, because here in America right still matters,” she stated.

Despite Setmayer’s strong words, her transition, along with the Lincoln Project’s shift, has been met with skepticism. Critics argue that the Lincoln Project, initially formed by disillusioned Republicans, has transformed into an organization aligned more closely with Democratic and liberal values. The Lincoln Project’s trajectory suggests a significant political compromise, moving from their original conservative principles to a more liberal stance. This transformation has led many to question their motivations and authenticity.

The Lincoln Project has faced accusations of being political grifters, capitalizing on the Left’s disdain for Donald Trump to accumulate substantial financial support. I’ve covered one of the founders, Rick Wilson here. Even left-leaning publications like The Atlantic have labeled the group as “unprincipled and partisan.” The claim that Setmayer and her colleagues still hold conservative principles seems increasingly tenuous. Instead, they have rebranded themselves as “Pro-Democracy Defenders,” a vague and conveniently malleable label that allows them to align with Democratic causes and benefactors.

The absence of substantial written work or definitive policy positions from Setmayer further fuels the skepticism. Despite being referred to as a “thought leader” by PBS, there is little to no published material outlining her political or cultural beliefs in detail. This lack of concrete evidence of her “hard and fast” positions leaves her political transformation open to interpretation and criticism.

The reality appears to be that Setmayer and the Lincoln Project have found a comfortable new home within the Democratic camp, but the epic irony here is that no one in the Democratic camp gives two hoots about the Lincoln Project. A quick look at the X platform (formerly known as Twitter) reveals the only “positive press” they get is from their own postings. Their initial hostility towards Trump enabled them to attract significant financial contributions from wealthy anti-Trump donors. However, this pivot also meant sidestepping any real effort to preserve conservative principles. Instead, they have embraced the Democratic agenda, aligning their actions with where the financial incentives lie.

Tara Setmayer and the Lincoln Project’s journey from self-proclaimed “principled conservatives” to committed liberals raises significant questions about political integrity and motivation. Their shift seems less about genuine ideological evolution and more about capitalizing on the current political climate to secure financial and political support. The once Republican stalwarts now find themselves firmly entrenched in the Democratic fold, a transformation driven as much by opportunity as by principle.

Tara Setmayer announced her exit from the Republican Party in November 2020.

The Republican party has abdicated their responsibilities and made a mockery of their oaths of office … the party has turned into a party of white grievance, said Setmayer. Hypocrisy, apparently voter suppression is part of the playbook now, no regrets.
