Today’s materialists, the folks leading the AI charge, claim their machines are becoming “intelligent” like us. Not so fast.

Sure, AI can mimic some of what our minds do, and it’s often faster and better at crunching numbers than we’ll ever be. That’s useful. But it’s just processing data. A machine has no body, no life story, no joy or grief. It’s never loved anyone, worked for something, or kept a promise to a friend. It has no conscience. It can’t tell right from wrong or own the consequences of its choices.

AI can fake the words and even fake empathy, but it doesn’t understand a thing it says.

All this talk of man-made minds reminds me of an old story that’s been making the rounds for years.

A scientist walks up to God and says, “Lord, we don’t need You anymore. Science has finally figured out how to create life out of nothing. In other words, we can now do what You did in the beginning.”

“Oh, is that so?” God asks.

“Well,” says the scientist, “we can take dust, form it into Your likeness, and breathe life into it, thus creating man.”

“That’s interesting,” God replies. “Show me.”

So the scientist bends down and starts molding the soil.

“Oh no, no, no,” God interrupts. “Get your own dust.”

It’s a joke, but it lands because it’s true. Every breakthrough we celebrate, whether a new vaccine, a faster chip, or a chatbot that writes poetry, is built from materials we didn’t make, governed by laws we didn’t write, and powered by minds we didn’t design. The brightest engineer in Silicon Valley still has to borrow God’s dust before he can build anything.

Here’s the irony. The materialists got one thing half right: we are made from dust. Scripture said so long before they did. But they stopped reading too soon. “The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). Dust is the raw material. The breath of God is what makes us human.

That’s exactly where the AI hype falls apart. Even if we could someday shape something that looks like us, talks like us, and passes every test we can devise, we still couldn’t give it that breath. No engineer can code it. No server farm can produce a soul. Only the Creator can do that, and He already has.

You and I were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), with eternity set in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We weren’t assembled for usefulness like a tool on a workbench. We were created for fellowship with our Maker.

And true wisdom doesn’t come from more data. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). A machine can store every verse of the Bible and never once bow its knee. But the humblest believer, praying alone in the dark, knows something no algorithm ever will: what it means to be loved by God.

The scientist in the story forgot whose dust he was standing on. Let’s not make the same mistake. Every breath you took this morning was a gift. Every heartbeat is borrowed. “In him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

So don’t let anyone tell you that you’re just stardust, or that a clever program is your equal. The God who breathed life into Adam sent His Son to redeem you, and Christ didn’t die for machines. He died for you.

Rest in that today. Then lift your eyes from the screen and give thanks to the One who formed you from the dust, filled you with His breath, and calls you by name.

You Can Code a Chatbot, But You Can’t Code a Soul Get Your Own Dust For decades, the materialist crowd told us we’re nothing more than leftover stardust, a lucky accident cooked up over billions of years by blind chemistry and natural selection.
