The perfect metaphor for the “Chatbot Wars:” “You never know what you’re gonna get.”
“Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
How about we just find out what one of the newest entrants in the Chatbot wars has to say about that…
GOOGLE BARD: Forrest Gump said to the lady on the park bench in the movie about a box of chocolates:
“My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
This line has become one of the most famous quotes from the movie, and it is often used to describe the unpredictable nature of life. Forrest’s mom used this analogy to help him understand that life is full of surprises, and that it is important to be open to new experiences.
The box of chocolates is a metaphor for life, and the different chocolates represent the different experiences that we have in life. We never know what life is going to throw our way, but we can choose to embrace the journey and enjoy the ride.
The quote “Life is like a box of chocolates” has been praised for its simplicity and its message of hope. It is a reminder that life is full of possibilities, and that we should never give up on our dreams.
Did Google just offer us its “Achilles Heel?”
I’m beginning to feel that Artificial Intelligence is exactly as Bard has described the Forrest Gump saying…
• Unpredictable nature
• Full of surprises
• We never know what it’s going to throw our way
The Internet has the same problem with that famous quote from “Forrest Gump.”
Confused yet? Maybe go back and listen to the video again … “Life WAS like a box of chocolates.” With these discrepancies in mind, let’s check in on the Chatbot Clown Show.
Here are 3 sample responses from the so-called “leaders in the field” among AI chatbots.
Our three contestants are…
1. Google Bard: from ZDNet … “Bard is Google’s experimental, conversational, AI chat service. It is meant to function similarly to ChatGPT, with the biggest difference being that Google’s service will pull its information from the web.”
In the demo, a user asked Bard the question: “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?” In Bard’s response, it mentioned that the JWST “took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.” Astronomers took to social media to quickly point out that the first image of an exoplanet was taken by an earthbound observatory in 2004, making Bard’s answer incorrect. The next day, Google lost $100 billion in market value — a decline attributed to the embarrassing mistake.
At least Bard does provide a disclaimer in its “Home” window…
I’m Bard, your creative and helpful collaborator. I have limitations and won’t always get it right, but your feedback will help me improve.
Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that doesn’t represent Google’s views.
2. Next is OpenAI’s Playground. The playground is not free, you pay per token usage like you would with the API. You can experiment and iterate with different prompts and generations. There is a wide variety of prompt settings that configure how it will respond but not much instruction about how they work … you have to “Google” that or click the “Help” button. The OpenAI Playground will write just about anything for you … short stories, blog posts, instruction manuals, you name it. A good review that covers the basics can be found at Business Insider. As you will see below, the Playground’s responses can be a little Spartan unless you jazz up your prompt with some very specific requests.
3. ChatGPT: ChatGPT was created by OpenAI, an AI research company. The company launched ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. So far, it’s my favorite bot along with a few other users … ChatGPT had more than one million users in the first five days after it launched. ChatGPT is free to use, regardless of what you use it for, including writing, coding, and much more.
The key to the effective use of AI for content generation is in the “Prompt.” I believe the phrase “Garbage in – Garbage out” is the operative term. The Internet is literally crawling with a new cottage industry built around “The Prompt.” I just Googled the phrase, “the key to using a chatbot is in the prompt” … 38,700,000 results.
The use of the chatbots boils down to a simple phrase compliments of our friend, Papa John, who before the fiasco of getting booted from his company, said, “Better Ingredients … better pizza.” Pizza Hut even took Papa John to court over that phrase in 1995, claiming it was “false advertising.” Pizza Hut lost the case.
ANYWAY, LET THE CHAT WARS BEGIN … YOU BE THE JUDGE
The same prompt was submitted to each of the chatbots and their response is presented without editing.
PROMPT: Explain how important it is not to depend solely on an AI bot for generating informational content, particularly because bots are only as good as the Internet content that is available to them and that bots are not immediately subject to corroborative fact-checking by credible entities outside the web.
GOOGLE BARD: It is important not to depend solely on an AI bot for generating informational content because bots are only as good as the internet content that is available to them. Bots are trained on massive datasets of text and code, but they can only generate content that is based on the information that they have been trained on. This means that bots can be susceptible to generating inaccurate or biased information, especially if they are trained on data that is itself inaccurate or biased.
In addition, bots are not immediately subject to corroborative fact checking by credible entities outside the web. This means that it can be difficult to verify the accuracy of information that is generated by a bot. For example, a bot might generate a news article that claims that a certain politician has been caught in a scandal. However, without corroborative fact checking, it would be difficult to know whether or not the information in the article is accurate.
As a result, it is important to use multiple sources of information when researching a topic. This includes using traditional sources of information, such as books and newspapers, as well as using online sources, such as news websites and blogs. It is also important to be aware of the potential biases of the sources that you are using. For example, a news website that is owned by a political party might be biased in favor of that party.
By using multiple sources of information and being aware of the potential biases of those sources, you can help to ensure that the information that you are using is accurate and unbiased.
Here are some additional tips for evaluating the accuracy of information generated by an AI bot:
Check the source of the information. Is the bot using a credible source, such as a government website or a scientific journal?
Look for evidence to support the claims made by the bot. Can you find other sources that corroborate the information?
Be aware of the bot’s limitations. Bots are not perfect, and they can sometimes make mistakes.
If you are unsure about the accuracy of the information, don’t hesitate to ask a human expert for help.
PROMPT: Explain how important it is not to depend solely on an AI bot for generating informational content, particularly because bots are only as good as the Internet content that is available to them and that bots are not immediately subject to corroborative fact-checking by credible entities outside the web.
Playground: AI bots are great at quickly providing large quantities of content, but it is important to note their limitations when it comes to providing reliable information. AI bots are only as good as the Internet content that is available to them, and this content may not always be accurate. Furthermore, bots are not immediately subject to corroborative fact checking by credible external sources, so accuracy is not guaranteed. It is therefore essential to not depend solely on an AI bot for generating informational content, because it may not provide reliably accurate or up-to-date information.
PROMPT: Explain how important it is not to depend solely on an AI bot for generating informational content, particularly because bots are only as good as the Internet content that is available to them and that bots are not immediately subject to corroborative fact-checking by credible entities outside the web.
ChatGPT: Relying solely on an AI bot for generating informational content can be risky due to a few important reasons. While AI bots like myself can process and generate text based on the vast amount of information available on the internet, there are limitations to our abilities and potential pitfalls to consider. Here are some key points to understand:
Dependence on internet content: AI bots heavily rely on the internet as a source of information. The quality and reliability of the content available on the internet can vary significantly. It’s important to remember that not all information on the web is accurate or up-to-date. Bots may inadvertently generate or present incorrect or outdated information if they are not trained on reliable sources or don’t have access to the most current data.
Lack of independent fact-checking: AI bots generally lack the ability to independently fact-check the information they generate. While they can provide quick responses and generate content based on patterns and knowledge acquired during training, they don’t have built-in mechanisms for corroborating facts with credible external entities or conducting in-depth research. This makes them susceptible to perpetuating misinformation or presenting biased viewpoints if the training data or sources they rely on are flawed.
Contextual understanding and interpretation: AI bots may struggle with understanding nuanced or ambiguous content. While they can perform well in specific domains they have been trained on, they may face difficulties when it comes to comprehending the broader context, intent, or subtleties of certain topics. This can lead to inaccuracies or incomplete information being generated.
Lack of human judgment and intuition: Bots are designed to process information based on patterns and algorithms, but they don’t possess human judgment or intuition. Human beings can apply critical thinking, evaluate credibility, and interpret information in a way that considers various perspectives and biases. Bots may not have the ability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources, leading to the potential generation of misleading or false information.
Ethical considerations and bias: AI bots are trained on data created by humans, which means they can inadvertently inherit biases present in the training data. This can result in biased content generation or unintentional promotion of certain viewpoints or ideologies. Additionally, AI bots may not have the ability to understand or address ethical concerns related to sensitive or controversial topics.
Given these limitations, it is crucial not to rely solely on AI bots for generating informational content. Instead, it’s important to complement their capabilities with human judgment, critical thinking, and corroborative fact-checking by credible entities outside the web. By combining human intelligence with AI technology, we can strive for more accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information.
