Romans 10:18-21
But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for
“Their voice has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.”
But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,
“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”
Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,
“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”
But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”
Commentary:
Paul anticipates an objection: perhaps Israel never truly heard. He answers with Psalm 19—the message has gone out to the ends of the earth. They heard; they simply refused. Quoting Moses and Isaiah, Paul shows this rejection was foretold. God would provoke Israel to jealousy through a “foolish nation”—the Gentiles—who were not seeking Him yet found Him by grace. Meanwhile, God stretches out His hands all day long to His own people, who remain disobedient and contrary. The tragedy is not God’s silence but Israel’s stubbornness, and the wonder is His persistent, outstretched mercy.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we marvel at Your patient mercy. You have not been silent—Your voice has gone out through creation, through Your prophets, and most fully through Your Son. Forgive us when we, like ancient Israel, hear yet refuse, when we stiffen our necks against Your outstretched hands. Soften our hearts to receive the gospel afresh. Thank You that in Your sovereign grace You have called those who were not seeking You, drawing Gentiles and Jews alike into one family through Christ. Make us faithful messengers of the word that has reached us, and provoke many to seek You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
